Ok, folks, I’m back again with another ‘diddy’, no pun intended.  When it comes to the music industry, many have heard horror stories that brim the cup of lost fame and fortunes.  To that end, however, there is a strategy that very few have used for their success and survival when it comes to dealing with the murky, sharky waters of the music industry.  Many like to fly by the seat of their pants with a devil-may-care attitude, but I digress.

Being the creative beings we are, the likes of doing admin, accounting, contractual negotiations, and the like are like an albatross chained to our necks stealing our precious time from creating and exploring our musical journey.

Not every artist is keen on traveling down this road as the excitement and the lure of stage lights and fame cloud common sense and rational thinking.  Many have fallen to this ‘sword’ of self-aggrandizement and burned countless Benjamins.

However, if we keep a sober mindset, and a few of these ideas and strategies in mind we can surely survive the storms and sharks that lurk on our horizon.

Reclaiming Your Royalties and Rights

As artists, we need to be vigilant about the rights to our creations and the royalties generated from said creations.  It is crucial to understand at least the basics of the laws that govern the music industry.  What we’re talking about is the protection of your ‘bread and butter’.

Working in this world of music and entertainment you need to secure your foundation by registering with various collection organizations.  Sound Exchange is an organization that will help in collecting and distributing royalties for digital performances. By registering you can ensure that you receive payments due to you from streaming and downloads.  Depending on how you operate in the industry other organizations that render services in this realm are ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers), BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.), AND SESAC (Society of European Stage Authors and Composers) who collect performing rights.
