The AI Hitmaker Era
When Everyone’s a Star and Musicians Pay the Price

MaurosArt
The lines are being blurred between artists and audience with this AI age in motion. With the emergence of AI tools and generative platforms, like YouTube’s DreamTrack, Suno, and Udio, any drunk monkey with a smartphone and a funky prompt can become a ‘celebrity musician’, mimicking the talented voices and styles like Drake, Billie Eilish, or Travis Scott with eerie precision. These AI-generated songs come about, mind you, without any studio time, no vocal training, or record label required. With that said, all this democratization of music creation does come with a cost.
The Artificial Music World and Its Impact on Real Musicians
The rise of the machine age in the music industry through AI is both a marvel of technology and an existential threat to the psyche of any established, or for that matter, rising artist. The challenge to human artistry and creativity is the onslaught of endless melodies, lyrics, and beats churned out by these ungodly algorithms. Look at it this way. How do independent artists, session musicians, and even chart-topping artists compete with synthetic creations that can be produced in a matter of seconds, and for the most part, free of charge? What kind of future is that?
Revenue streams are already being disrupted, and it ain’t pretty. AI music is already flooding streaming platforms and diluting listener attention, all the while shrinking licensing opportunities, as royalty-free AI tracks are what many brands are opting for. The grand effect of all of this? A palpable loss of income! A substantial loss of creative recognition for real musicians.
Disruption and Opportunity through AI Song Creation
Like I stated before, music being made today is redefined by tools like Suno, Udio, and DreamTrack. Platforms like these allow users to create ‘fugazi’ personalities and generate songs based on text prompts, moods, or even visual inputs. This all sounds exciting, and the possibilities for customization are endless, with personalized playlists and interactive experiences, but it also begs the question about how all of this will impact the future of songwriting as a profession.
With the normalization of AI in music creation, will it be possible to see the next Grammy-winning hit be a creation from some neural network beast? Let’s go deeper than that and ask this question: What does originality mean in a world where machines can replicate style, emotion, and voice? Are we headed for a Bladerunner-type world sometime down the line?
“I also think it's risky; this could turn music into a utility. Music as an art form could be hijacked,…”
The Era of Custom AI Music
Rapidly unfolding is the era where anyone can have their very own personal AI composer. One that could generate tailor-made songs for your birthday, a breakup from a lover, or just a tune for a morning jog customized to fit your taste, mood, or even your biometric data, yikes! How about this one? Brands could create jingles hyper-targeted towards a specific demographic within the marketplace, or filmmakers could score scenes in real-time during the production phase.
As AI models improve through evolutionary phases, hyper-customization of things will become the norm. In my opinion, this will indeed alter the emotional nuances and cultural context of humans through AI modeling. I also think it's risky; this could turn music into a utility. Music as an art form could be hijacked, turning it into a background feature rather than a centerpiece of human expression.
Copyright Chaos: Who Owns AI Music?
When it comes to copyright, it is a huge briar patch, a landscape of legal issues and chaos. The question is, if a song is generated by an AI bot in the style of, say, Taylor Swift, then who owns it? The drunk monkey who prompted it? The company that built the AI model? Or Taylor Swift, whose style was mimicked?
In framing the copyright laws for AI, legal teams are scrambling to catch up. While creating these new categories for intellectual property for AI-generated content, some jurisdictions are still exploring the possibilities. Others, on the other hand, argue that such generated works should remain in the public domain. Meanwhile, in the middle of this hoopla, artists are pressing for protection against the unauthorized use of their vocals, likeness, and brand identity.
Case in point, YouTube’s DreamTrack, is currently in an experimental phase with select artists; implications are broadly unknown and are still unfolding as the boundaries are being stretched and tested. The tsunami of lawsuits, legislation, and ethical debates to come about will be expected, as AI becomes ever more mainstream.
Conclusion: A New Era, But at What Cost?
AI is transforming music creation from a craft into a superpower. No years of training, study, or talent required. Like that scene in The Matrix, “I know Kung Fu”. This new superpower will enable millions of newbies to create incredible music at levels beyond professionals in the music industry. This new superpower will also threaten the livelihood of artists and performers who have dedicated their lives to the craft. The challenge facing the music industry is finding balance. Balance between innovation and integrity, access and sincerity.
As a whole, the music industry must evolve as a community, but at its heart, it must protect the soul of music. The soul of music is human and spiritual, where stories are told, struggles expressed, and soulful nuance and spirit are expressed behind every note.
