Why Independent Artists Are Losing Ground

Here we go again! Check it out. Platforms like Deezer and Spotify are flipping the rules, basically rewriting them, and how royalties will be distributed. This rug pull is creating a ripple effect that is sidelining mid-level and up-and-coming artists the hardest. The streaming industry, at one time, was a revolutionary event, celebrated for democratizing access to music and giving independent artists a fighting chance at success. Once again, that monster of greed has taken a foothold.

Deezer’s “Artist-Centric” Model: A Controversial Shift

Doubling down on its artist-centric royalty model, Deezer has prioritized how artists are filtered to meet certain thresholds of engagement. Take, for instance, a royalty calculation where the algorithm tracks songs that have achieved 1,000 streams from at least 500 unique listeners per month, thereby receiving the “double boost”. Now, if the streams come from actual searches rather than those algorithmic recommendations, well then, the payout is doubled again! Yes, some artists are earning four times more per stream than their peers. When it comes to “non-noise content”, where music or tracks are designed to be like white noise or sounds for studying, Deezer has plans to remove them and allocate the royalties to music creators.

This is knocking the scales out of balance. Like a “reverse Robin Hood” effect, as some critics have put it. This move is poised to take revenues from up-and-coming artists and those about to break through and give the lion's share to well-established acts. This is despite Deezer framing the narrative as a move toward fraud prevention and creating more fairness. A major indie distributor, Believe, has called the system “unfair”. Believe warns that this system will establish an environment of inequality, one that will make it harder for new talent to break through, as stated before.

Spotify’s New Rules: Independent Artists Left Behind

As the world’s largest streaming platform, Spotify has launched policies that further marginalize independent musicians. Take a look at some of these key changes:

  • 1,000-Stream Threshold: Spotify now only pays royalties on tracks that achieve at least 1,000 streams per year, cutting off revenue for millions of songs. In 2024, 87% of tracks fell below this threshold, resulting in over $47 million in unpaid royalties for smaller creators.

  • Discovery Mode Trade-Off: Artists can opt into algorithmic promotion via Discovery Mode—but at the cost of lower per-stream payouts, sometimes dropping below $0.001 per stream.

  • Major Label Advantage: Spotify’s new “Super Premium” tier includes high-resolution audio and exclusive features negotiated with major labels, ensuring their artists receive higher payouts and better protection. Independent artists, lacking such deals, face diluted royalties as Spotify bundles music with podcasts and audiobooks under one subscription price.

Broader trends are emerging, and these changes will reflect them. Again, back to lining the pockets, Spotify is optimizing for mega profitability and major-label partnerships. Big money, but this leaves indie musicians in the field fighting over scraps.

“…while streaming accounts for 84% of U.S. recorded music revenue, most of that dough flows to major labels…”

The Harsh Reality: Streaming Doesn’t Pay

It was known that streaming revenues were already notoriously low, even before these changes came about. As rocksoffmag.com puts it, artists promoting their music on Spotify earn somewhere between $0.003 and $0.005 per stream, meaning to earn the estimated minimum wage income in the USA, they will need to have played over a million streams per month! Really? And for the mid-level and small bands out there, this is nearly impossible without some kind of viral success or heavy marketing budgets.

Adding insult to injury, industry data shows that while streaming accounts for 84% of U.S. recorded music revenue, most of that dough flows to major labels and top-charting artists. With this in mind, independent artists in survival mode rely heavily on touring, merchandise, and funding from their fans on platforms like Bandcamp and Patreon.

Cultural Consequences: Less Diversity, More Homogeneity

Music culture is being reshaped by the industry's move towards higher streaming thresholds and engagement-based payout schemes. Recording labels are now in the process of allocating marketing budgets selectively, with a strong emphasis on tracks that have a higher performance potential. With this kind of filtering going on, it could mean fewer experimental releases are made and a narrowing of the availability of new music, too. With this ‘game in play’ in prioritization by the major streaming platforms, mainstream music hits will always be hoisted above and over niche genres. Sorry, folks, we only have one flavor.

What Can Artists Do?

The deck of cards seems to be stacked against the smaller creators in the streaming economy. But to mitigate this mess, there are some strategies artists can use to lessen the impact:

  • Direct-to-Fan Models: Platforms like Bandcamp and Patreon allow artists to monetize loyal audiences without relying on streaming payouts.

  • Diversify Income Streams: Sync licensing, teaching, and live streaming can provide alternative revenue.

  • Leverage Superfans: Building a dedicated fanbase willing to pay for exclusive content is becoming essential in the era of “Streaming 2.0”.

The Bottom Line

The evolution of streaming platforms and their evolving tiers is a given. For independent artists, it's not necessarily for the better, either. The dream of making a living from streaming alone is fast becoming a faded fad. With technology speeding through its stages in growth and the economy tooling along, musicians will have to be vigilant in their future endeavors. For musicians, adaptability isn’t optional—it’s all about survival.
